A mother and her three-year-old daughter were tragically killed in Virginia Beach when their SUV was struck by another vehicle that apparently ran a red light. The accident occurred at the intersection of Dam Neck Road and Corporate Landing Parkway Beach on October 20.
In the impact, mother and daughter were thrown from the vehicle. According to news media accounts, the mother was not wearing her seat belt, but the child was in her car seat when the vehicle rolled over after the collision. As a result, Virginia Beach police as part of their accident investigation are trying to determine why the child was ejected.
The child died at the scene, while her mother later passed away at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.
The woman’s husband, who was driving the SUV at the time, and their two-year-old son, survived the crash unharmed, as did the other driver. Witnesses told police the SUV had the green light when it was struck.
According to police, the family is from the Emporia, Virginia, and were visiting Virginia Beach for a conference the father was attending.
Virginia Beach police also indicated that charges against the driver who ran the red light are pending. A police spokesman added that neither alcohol nor speed were factors in the crash.
