The Yasmin birth control pill puts about $1.8 billion in annual revenue into the coffers of the manufacturer, Bayer Healthcare. According to, Yasmin is the top-selling oral contraceptive in the U.S. so the stakes for Bayer are quite high. However, because of the alleged side effects of its Yasmin and Yaz  birth control brands, Bayer is defending itself against hundreds of personal injury lawsuits from plaintiffs who suffered harm from the pills, most of which have been consolidated in Illinois federal court. The lawsuits argue in part that Bayer achieved market dominance by claiming that the pills could also treat premenstrual syndrome and moderate acne, while at the same time downplaying the possible severe side effects.

Both pills contain the progestin drospirenone, which can lead to potentially serious heart problems and overall health issues such as strokes, blood clots, and gallbladder diseases according to some studies. Bayer says it is standing behind the safety of these contraceptives. The U.S. Food and Drug administration has apparently warned Bayer at least three times over misleading television commercials about the safety and efficacy of the pills. Both pills were previously approved for sale in the U.S. by the FDA.

If you or a loved one has been harmed by any of the side effects of these oral birth control products, you may be entitled to seek money damages in a Yaz or Yasmin lawsuit against the manufacturer.
