An Alzheimer’s disease researcher has come up with a possible non-surgical, noninvasive way to treat traumatic brain injury–snorting a therapeutic agent as if it was a nasal decongestant.
In research on mice, Dr. William Frey of the University of Minnesota found that when stem cells suspended in fluid are snorted, the cells rapidly migrate to the brain. This delivery method may have application to humans with brain disorders.
Frey said the original idea came to him in a dream. It occurred to him that if bad things (such as poison gas or illegal drugs) can get into the brain through the nose, “why can’t we use the same route of delivery for getting good things into the brain?”
The Food and Drug Administration has yet to approve any stem cell-based therapies for brain disorders. However, Frey’s method if proved effective could be an effective way for delivering not only stem cells, but other therapeutic cells or drugs that can’t easily penetrate the blood-brain barrier.
Although more testing needs to be done, inhaling medication through the nose could potentially replace brain surgery with a simple home treatment, Frey claims. “I think that we will eventually see nasal sprays for these serious brain diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, head injury, stroke,” Frey said. Frey is the founder of The Alzheimer’s Research Center, located at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Clinical trials have apparently shown that Alzheimer’s patients experience improved memory and attention function when taking insulin through their nasal passages.
“Intranasal delivery of therapeutic cells could potentially benefit the treatment of head injury, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and so on,” Frey added.
Traumatic brain injuries are often sustained in auto accidents, falls due to slippery surfaces, or any jolt or shock to the head, neck, or brain. Victims may require life-long care which often places a financial burden upon family members and loved ones.
As a result of the potentially devastating nature of head trauma, representation by the best possible attorney is crucial for a fair recovery.
