A nursing home remains open and operating in spite of reportedly terrible conditions for patients, according to WVEC. Ashwood Assisted Living, in Hampton, Virginia, has been subject to scrutiny by the Virginia Department of Social Services (DSS) and has received two cease-and-desist rulings from the Department in the last year, but has not shut down.
Some of the terrible, unhealthy conditions listed in the facility include moldy showers, a strong smell of urine about the building, patients receiving incorrect medication or no medication at all, and other awful circumstances that pose a danger to patients and their health. One inspector reported finding a patient on the floor in nothing but a dirty adult diaper.
The DSS is still working to close the facility down entirely, and the home has not answered inquiries by news sources. The facility’s temporary operating license was revoked over a year ago, in August 2012; after an appeal by the facility, the DSS licensing division upheld the revocation.
Nursing homes and assisted living facilities are supposed to be safe, comfortable and healthy environments for elderly family members and loved ones to reside. Especially when you consider that older patients are more in danger of deleterious conditions, it is inexcusable that a nursing home would evince so little regard for their patients. The decision of the DSS to shut down this facility is entirely appropriate, and I hope that Ashwood is closed as soon as possible.
